A Gazetteer of the Young Kingdoms

At the time of this gazetteer, the upstart humans of the Young Kingdoms have eclipsed the Bright Empire of Melniboné. It is the world at the time of Elric VIII, last of the Sorcerer-Emperors of Melniboné. Please note that the Saga of Elric of Melniboné tends to span a Multiverse of dimensions, planes, and worlds. To try to simplify the references, any mention of a location in the Multiverse that is not a part of the Young Kingdoms will be referred to in the following text as a Realm.

Aflitain:--the capital of the Western continental nation of Shazaar. (Stormbringer)

Agincoure:--a county, presumably in the nation of Argimiliar. (A Woman's Power)

Agnesh-Nal:--a sprawling town of pale villas that lies in the realm of Salish-Kwoonn. The town sits across a deep river from its sister-town of Agnesh-Val by way of a thirteen arch bridge. Its people are wealthy. (Revenge of the Rose)

Agnesh-Val:--a town nestled along a deep river amid picturesque limestone cliffs in the realm of Salish-Kwoonn. The town's buildings and castle are covered with flowering creepers. The town sits across the river from its sister-town of Agnesh-Nal by way of a thirteen arch bridge. (Revenge of the Rose)

Alof:--a tribe of hermaphrodites living in the western portion of the Dakwinsi Steppe. (White Wolf's Song)

Alorasaz:--a trading town of southern Lormyr that lies on the Zaphra-Trepak River. It is a city of beautifully made timber houses and towers of finely carved woods. (The Vanishing Tower)

Ameeron:--a city of the damned located in the Realm of Shadows. The exiled inhabitants of other planes populate it; no one lives there by choice. (Elric of Melniboné)

Anakhazhan:--a nation of the Unmapped East that lies east of the Valederian Directorates. Its army, with Elric's help, completely destroyed the Haghan'iin Host. (Revenge of the Rose)

Andlermaign:--a city-state in a remote area of Argimiliar. (William Church's map of the Young Kingdoms)

Ar River:--the watercourse that lies between the countries of Oin and Yu. The port-city of Dhoz-Kam straddles the river. (Elric of Melniboné)

Aramundy:-- a city of the nation of Volofar. It lies in a realm known as "The Land of the Three". (Revenge of the Rose)

Argimiliar:--a nation of the Southern Continent that appears to lie between Filkhar and Pikarayd. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate, Stormbringer)

Ashaneloon:--a palace of slender towers, turrets, and domes lying on a small, rocky island amid the Boiling Sea. It is a citadel of Myshella, the Dark Lady of Kaneloon. (The Vanishing Tower)

Bakshaan:--a city of the Eastern Continent, rich enough to make all the others around it seem poor by comparison. The city lies north of Vilmir. A forest lies an hours ride to the south. By the time of the Chaos War, she had been transformed into a battle-ready fortress. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate, The Bane of the Black Sword, The Last Enchantment, Stormbringer)

Balwyn Moor:--the name of the land in the realm where Elric was magically summoned by Prince Corum. (The Vanishing Tower)

Banarva:-- the capital and chief trading port of the maritime nation of Tarkesh. (Stormbringer)

Bas'lk:--a city of the Valederian Directorates. Of all the cities of the Directorates, it lies the closest to Tanelorn. (Revenge of the Rose)

Basta:--a city of the Dakwinsi Steppe. Hardy horses are bred there. (White Wolf's Song)

Bauradim:--a clan of nomads living in the Sighing Desert east of Quarzhasaat. (The Fortress of the Pearl)

Boiling Sea:--a stretch of water that lies far to the south of Melniboné. It is thought to be fed by volcanoes lying deep beneath its surface. Thick steam lies over the sea and no mortal ship is thought to be able to sail through it. (Elric of Melniboné, The Vanishing Tower)

Bright Empire:--the Melnibonéan name of their empire that ruled for some 10,000 years over the fortunes of the younger kingdoms. At the time of Elric, the Bright Empire hasn't been in existence except as a name for some 500 years. (Stormbringer)

Bronze Tent:--a great tent with walls made of pure bronze. It is a temple of the Sighing Desert nomads and where they go to meditate. (The Fortress of the Pearl)

Cadsandria:--the capital city of Argimiliar, it makes strong wine. (The Weird of the White Wolf)

Cha River:--the main watercourse of the southern nation of Pikarayd. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate)

Chalal:--a trading port and the capital city of Pikarayd. It lies on the banks of the Cha River. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate)

Chaos, Straits of:--it lies between Dharijor and the island nation of Pan Tang. It is a stretch of water lashed by eternal storms and inhabited by malevolent sea creatures. (Stormbringer)

Changsha:--a nation of the Unmapped East. It was brutally pillaged by the hordes of Teraren Gashtek. (The Bane of the Black Sword, Stormbringer)

Chlu-Melnoth:--a city of the mythical "nation" of Samarianth. (Temptations of Iron)

City of Screaming Statues:--see Hwamgaarl.

City of the Yellow Coast:--a port city of the southern nation of Argimiliar. (William Church's map of the Young Kingdoms)

Crimson Gate:--a portal leading from the Young Kingdoms to a realm ruled by Earl Saxif D'Aan. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate)

Crystalline Wood:--a forest of crystal spires that lies in the vicinity of the Garden of the Rune. It can be found in the realm of "The Land of the Three". (Revenge of the Rose)

Daglern:--a city-state of the Unmapped East. (Celebration of Celine)

Dakwinsi Steppe:--a cold plain of the Eastern Continent. It presumably lies far to the north of the Sighing Desert. (White Wolf's Song)

Darkvale:--an evil, haunted valley in the realm of Prince Corum, where the Vanishing Tower of Voilodion Ghagnasdiak would momentarily appear. (The Vanishing Tower)

Dead Hills:--an area of unvegitated shale hills and valleys, on the southern border of Pikarayd. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate)

Dhakos:--the capital city of the western nation of Jharkor. (The Weird of the White Wolf)

Dharijor:--a nation that lies on the Western Continent, south of Tarkesh and east of Jharkor. It lies across the Straits of Chaos from the island nation of Pan Tang. Dharijor's capital city is Lashmar. The ancient Melnibonéan Province of Fwen-Omeyo used to lie near here. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate, The Vanishing Tower, Stormbringer)

Dharzi:--a nearly forgotten land. The race inhabiting it appears to have been dead for nearly 1000 years. The land was famed for its terrible hunting beasts, ½ dog, and ½ fierce bird. (The Weird of the White Wolf, Stormbringer)

Dhoz-Kam:--the capital of the countries of Oin and Yu. It is a seaport, and it straddles the River Ar, with half of the city lying in each country. The only large city in either country, Dhoz-Kam is an ugly, ramshackle place. (Elric of Melniboné)

Dioperda:--a city of the western nation of Shazaar. (Stormbringer)

Dorel:--a nation that lies on the edge of the world, presumably south of Pikarayd. (The Bane of the Black Sword)

Dragon Arum:--the legendary "City of the Eldren", it lies deep in the Valley of Dragons. (The Dragon's Heart)

Dragon Falls:--a resonant cataract on the island of Melniboné. This is the site where an ancestor of Elric's died in combat with himself. (Revenge of the Rose)

Dragon Sea:--the name of the body of water that surrounds Melniboné. It lies to the northwest of the southern nation of Lormyr. (The Weird of the White Wolf, Stormbringer)

Dremia:--a nation of pirates that prey upon ships sailing the Heavy Sea. It can be found in a realm called "The Land of the Three". (Revenge of the Rose)

Duntrollin:-- a village-sized wheeled city of the Gypsy Nations, it can be found in the realm of Salish Kwoonn. (Revenge of the Rose)

Eastern Sea:--the body of water lying to the east of the nations of the Unmapped East. (Celebration of Celine)

Eastlands:--see the Unmapped East.

Eldren:--an ancient race of draconian humanoids that legends say created the race of Melnibonéans. (The Dragon's Heart)

Elwher:--the mercantile capital of the Eastern Lands, thought by many to be the finest city in the world. The city lies to the east of the Sighing Desert, north of the Weeping Wastes, and west of Phum. It lay amid the peaceful hills and plains of the nation of Eshmir. Moonglum hales from here. There are at least two deserts and three mountain ranges between Elwher and Karlaak. (Elric of Melniboné, The Weird of the White Wolf, The Vanishing Tower, The Bane of the Black Sword)

Eshmir:--a gentile land of rolling hills and plains, it lies in the Unmapped East at the edge of the Sighing Desert. One of the strongest economic nations of the East, it capital is called Elwher. (The Bane of the Black Sword, Stormbringer)

Eshraao:--"of the Silver Streets". It is a city-state of the Unmapped East. Its land is considered to be the most exotic of the Young Kingdoms, and it lies to the west of a body of water called the Eastern Sea. Eshraao considers itself the neutral hub of the East and welcomes travelers of all nationalities to the city. (Celebration of Celine)

Fadort:--a city-state of the Unmapped East. (Celebration of Celine)

Fhaligarn:--the name of the seaport citadel of Earl Saxif D'Aan. It lies in the same blue-sunned realm as the Islands beyond the Crimson Gate. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate)

Filkhar:--a coastal country of the Southern Continent, it lies north and east of Lormyr and west of Argimiliar. Its capital city is called Raschil. (The Fortress of the Pearl, The Weird of the White Wolf, Stormbringer)

Forest of Souls:--the realm that Melnibonéan spirits go when they aren't pledged to a Chaos Lord. (Revenge of the Rose)

Forest of Troos:--a vast, frightful forest that blossoms in the Kingdom of Org, on the Eastern Continent. The forest was created by the "Doomed Folk", a race that released tremendous forces that caused terrible changes on its plant and animal population. The forest, where dark blossoms hide the sky, has been in existence since before the "Age of the Bright Kingdom". It is in the Forest of Troos where Elric finds many of the rare drugs that sustain his vitality. (The Vanishing Tower, The Bane of the Black Sword)

Fortress of the Pearl:--lies within the Realm of Dreams. It was the place that Varadia, the Holy Girl of the Bauradim, was held captive by her own dreams, until Elric and Oone the Dreamthief freed her. (The Fortress of the Pearl)

Fwen-Omeyo:--an ancient Melnibonéan province that lies near the nation of present day Dharijor. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate)

Garden of the Rune:--it lies at the center of the realm known as "The Land of the Three". In the middle of the garden lies an altar. (Revenge of the Rose)

Gharav:--a province of the western nation of Jharkor. (The Weird of the White Wolf)

Gorjhan:--a small town that lies in the Weeping Wastes near Karlaak. It was sacked by the hordes of Teraren Gashtek. (The Bane of the Black Sword)

Graghin:--a small fishing port that lies in an area that doesn't understand the language of the Young Kingdoms. It presumably lies in the East, not far from the Roaring Rocks. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate)

Grey Lands:--a barren wasteland that bestows the gift of self-knowledge upon anyone who ventures out into it. (Trembler on the Axis)

Gromoorva:--a port city of the western nation of Dharijor. (Stormbringer)

Guyë:-- an estate in the Western Province of Anakhazhan. It is a peaceful place, of green hills broken by lines of cypress and poplar. (Revenge of the Rose)

Gypsy Nation:--called the "People of the Road," they are a nation of travelers that exist in a realm called Salish-Kwoonn. They live on large, village-sized wheeled ships that travel on a road that leads around their world. (Revenge of the Rose)

Haghan'iin Host:--a tribe or clan living near the Valederian Directorates. They captured and tortured Elric until he escaped. He raised an army and destroyed them so completely, not a soul remained alive. (Revenge of the Rose)

Heavy Sea:--an ocean of what appears as cold, liquefied lead. Its waves rise and fall with agonizing slowness. While it is known to exist in the realm of "The Land of the Three", the sea flows between numerous realms of existence. (Revenge of the Rose)

H'hui'shan:--the "City of the Island". The ancient capital of Melniboné, it was destroyed in a single night in the only civil war the island ever experienced. It was a war between those lords allied with Chaos and those remaining loyal to Balance. The war lasted three days, and left the city unpopulated for at least a century after its destruction. (Revenge of the Rose)

Hwamgaarl:--also called the "City of Screaming Statues", it is the capital city of the island nation of Pan Tang and famed for its potent sorceries. The "Screaming Statues" are the petrified remains of the island's people, left with an awful awareness of their situation. (The Weird of the White Wolf, Stormbringer)

Hy-Napir:--a desert of the Unmapped East. (Trembler on the Axis)

Ilmar:--the capital of Ilmiora, the city is a large, prosperous seaport. (The Vanishing Tower, The Bane of the Black Sword)

Ilmiora:--a large nation of the Eastern Continent, where justice is known to prevail. Ilmiora lies to the north of Vilmir and Org, east of the Weeping Wastes, south of the Sighing Desert, and west of the Pale Sea. Its capital is the port city of Ilmar. It is a land of flat plains and fine leathers. Politically it is a republic, its city-states ruled by a Senate. (The Vanishing Tower, The Bane of the Black Sword, Stormbringer)

Imrryr:--"the Beautiful". Also known as the "Dreaming City", it was the capital of the Dragon Isle of Melniboné. The city was located on the southeast coast of the island. Imrryr was a city of "tall, scintillating towers, in lovely colors of rose-pinks and pollen yellows, purples and pale greens, mauves, browns, oranges, hazy blues, whites and powdery golds". She was considered so lovely that it's people hid their slaves, so they wouldn't make the city unattractive with their presence. The Ruby Throne of the Sorcerer Emperors of Melniboné was located in the Imperial Palace in Imrryr. The city was always cloaked from view by the thousands of birds covering it, due to a pact the Sorcerer Emperors made with Fileet, Lady of the Birds. A seaport, Imrryr's harbor was guarded for a millennia by an intricate sea-maze. The city was the site of several attacks by fleets led against it by barbarians from the Young Kingdoms. Imrryr, Plain of:--the area of Melniboné that the city of Imrryr sits upon. (Revenge of the Rose)

Inaurim:--a city of northern Ilmiora, famed for its fleet horses. (Temptations of Iron)

Inim'l'asty:--a city of the Unmapped East. (Celebration of Celine)

Iosaz:--the capital city of Lormyr. It lies several days ride from the coast on the Zaphra-Trepak River. (The Vanishing Tower)

Islands beyond the Crimson Gate:--the desolate island realm ruled by Earl Saxif D'Aan. The realm lies under a blue sun. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate)

Jadmar:--the large port-city capital of Vilmir, it is the start of a caravan route leading to Tanelorn. (The Fortress of the Pearl, The Vanishing Tower)

Jharkor:--a nation of the Western Continent. Jharkor lies to the south of Dharijor, southwest of Tarkesh, and north of Shazaar. To the east lies the Pale Sea. It is a strong seapower. Its capital is the city of Dhakos. There is a mountain range in the west, while the interior of the country is mostly grasslands. The seacoast consists of mostly sea-cliffs. This was one of the places where Elric swore an oath of vengeance on Theleb K'aarna. (The Weird of the White Wolf, The Bane of the Black Sword, Stormbringer)

Kallundburg:-- a city of the northlands on the realm of Earth. It was the home of the werewolf Esbern Snare. (Revenge of the Rose)

Kaneloon, Castle:--the citadel of the Dark Lady, Myshella. It was located at the farthest edge of the known world, south of the southern nations. To the south lay the World's Edge, and the stuff of unformed Chaos. There were lands west, north, and east of it, but no civilization existed within at least several days journey. The castle appeared as a ponderous series of man-made cliffs, reaching to the clouds. It sat above a forested plain, and a river flowed beneath it. A place of magic, the castle was able to manifest whatever it was that you desired. When heroes of the age would summon forth new land from the raw Chaos, the castle would disappear from its old location and reappear at the new land's southernmost point, always placing itself at the World's Edge. After the Dark Lady's death, the Lords of Chaos used the citadel at "the Time of Change". (The Weird of the White Wolf, The Last Enchantment)

Kardik:--a tribe living on the eastern portion of the Dakwinsi Steppe. They have adapted to living in that cold land. (White Wolf's Song)

Karlaak:--the "City of Jade Towers", it lies on the east edge of Ilmiora, near the Weeping Wastes. Karlaak is a city of squat walls and slender spires, of graceful towers and domes. It trades in rare jade and amber. A senate rules the city-state. There is a forest to the west of it, and a mountain range lies between it and Jadmar. Kelmian Horde:--a tribe or clan of humanoid horsemen that lived in the southern reaches of Lormyr. Most were destroyed by magic during an assault on Castle Kaneloon. (The Vanishing Tower)

Klant:--a province of the nation of Lormyr, in the Southern Lands. (The Weird of the White Wolf)

Klöef:--a mountainous tribe of the Unmapped East. They are aggressive and fierce, of generous spirit, and love of wine, women, and song. (Trembler on the Axis)

Korillya:--a nation of the Unmapped East that lies to the north of Eshraao. (Celebration of Celine)

Kretti:--a savage tribe from the Silent Lands who migrated to the Sorcerer's Isle. Elric destroyed them in a massive spell-duel. (Elric at the End of Time)

Kwan:--a city several days travel from Quarzhasaat. It lay in the foothills of a mountain range called the "Ragged Pillars". It grows the herbs that Elric needs to maintain his vitality. (The Fortress of the Pearl)

Land of the Three:--the realm wherein lies the Heavy Sea. It was given name by Mother Phat. (Revenge of the Rose)

Lashmar:--the capital city of Dharijor. It lies on the Western Continent. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate, The Vanishing Tower)

Lormyr:--a major nation of the Southern Continent, lying to the north of Yu and Oin. Lormyr is an undulating landscape of small hills and valleys. Lormyr is famed for its great rivers, the Schlan and the Zaphra-Trepek. These rivers helped make her rich and kept her strong. The oldest of the Young Kingdoms, Lormyr has declined from the peak of her power. It has mellowed into a nation both picturesque and cultured. It is the sweetest, most tranquil of the countries of the Young Kingdoms. The nation is considered to be a seapower. This is one of the nations where Elric swore an oath of vengeance on Theleb K'aarna. Lormyrian Republic:--One of the earliest of the Young Kingdoms, it came to an end 200 years prior to Elric's life, and became the nation of Lormyr. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate)

Malador:--a city in the land of Lormyr. Earl Aubric haled from here. (The Weird of the White Wolf)

Ma-na-kil-agra:--the "Fort of Evening", a stronghold on the Island of Purple Towns. The fort was in existence prior to the Age of the Bright Kingdoms. The site is the place where a lonely race came to die. (Stormbringer)

Marshes of the Mists:--an ill-omened swamp lying on the border between Shazaar and the Silent Land. (The Weird of the White Wolf, Stormbringer)

Medicine Mount:--a hill outside of Old Hrolmar containing an abundance of the drug that stimulates Elric's vitality. It also contains a multiversal gate. (A Devil Unknown)

Melniboné:--the sorcerous "Dragon Isle", inhabited by a race of moody, inward-looking humanoids that gave name to the land. The isle was located at the center of the part of the Earth known as the "West". The island was beautiful, with forests and fields covered with the poisonous berries and herbs that gave the race its monstrous and magnificent dreams. Their ancestors came as nomads of the worlds, to settle there and, some said, been welcomed by an even older race that they superseded and with whom the royal line intermarried. The Bright Empire of Melniboné was master of the world for ten thousand years, but ceased to rule it some 500 years prior to the rule of Elric VIII. In ancient times, the Sorceror Emperors of Melniboné made a pact with the race of dragons, using them as mounts and weapons of war. A fleet of golden, pyramid-shaped battle-barges that were virtually indestructible also protected the Dragon Isle. (Elric of Melniboné, Revenge of the Rose, et al)

Menii:--the capital of the Island of Purple Towns, long considered to be the friendliest and most humble of the towns. (Elric of Melniboné, Revenge of the Rose)

Milan:--an Italian city on a realm called Earth. Elric was thought to be a demon there. (A Devil Unknown)

Mordaga's Castle:--this citadel lies on a single mountain rising from the wastes of the Sighing Desert. The castle is found 139 steps up the side of the mountain, and guarded by many fiendishly clever traps. It is considered virtually impregnable. The castle was fashioned from granite and a type of blue stone. (Stormbringer)

Multiverse:--a super-reality of planes upon planes, and realms upon realms, comprising the infinite layers of existence. The setting for the Eternal Champion cycle. Elric never really remembered his journeys across the Multiverse, except as in fragments of dreams. (The Vanishing Tower)

Myyrrhn:--a mountainous land that lies beyond the northwestern nations. It is inhabited by a race of winged humanoids that have a hatred of giant owls. (The Weird of the White Wolf, Stormbringer)

Nadsokor:--the infamous "City of Beggars". It lies in the eastern nation of Vilmir near the Varkalk River. Abandoned some centuries earlier by its people fleeing a virulent pox, it has since been occupied by thieves and beggars. Ruled by a beggar King and his court, the city is disgusting. It can be smelled 10 miles away. This was one of the places where Elric swore an oath of vengeance on Theleb K'aarna. The city is famed as having the most skilled thieves in the world. Nargesser:--a province of the western nation of Dharijor. (Stormbringer)

Negril:--a nation of the Unmapped East, it lies near Eshraao. (Celebration of Celine)

Nesvek:--a city of the northlands on the realm of Earth. (Revenge of the Rose)

Nieva:--a port city of the western nation of Dharijor. (The Bane of the Black Sword)

Nihrain:--also called the "Hewn City of Nihrain", it lies amid a deep fissure high in the mountains above Jharkor. The ancient city, carved from the living rock of the mountain, was the home of a group called "The Ten." (Stormbringer)

Nio:--a port city of the western nation of Tarkesh. (Stormbringer)

Nishvalni-Oss:--A city of the Valederian Directorates, it lies north of the Sighing Desert between the cities of Bas'lk and Valederia. (Revenge of the Rose)

Oberlorn:--an Ilmiorian village lying in the forest south of Bakshaan. (The Last Enchantment)

Oin:--a poor barbarian nation lying several months travel south from Melniboné on the Southern Continent. It consists of unforested jungle and infertile plains that are farmed by its inhabitants. Oin lies south of Lormyr and north of the River Ar and the nation of Yu. Its capital city is the port of Dhoz-Kam, which it shares with the nation of Yu. (Elric of Melniboné)

Oio:--the place where the Rose bought her spells. its location is not recorded. (Revenge of the Rose)

Okara:--a nation of the Unmapped East. It has a lion-flag. It was conquered by the horde of Teraren Gashtek. (The Bane of the Black Sword, Stormbringer)

Old Hrolmar:--a Vilmirian city-state that boasts a baroque skyline. It is a city of intellectuals, and a meeting place for all the imaginative people of the Young Kingdoms. Duke Avan Astran haled from here. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate, The Vanishing Tower)

Oldest Ocean:--the sea that lies between Melniboné and the nations of the Southern Continent. (William Church's map of the Young Kingdoms)

Org:--a tiny kingdom of the Eastern Continent, in which blossoms the frightful Forests of Troos. The nation is ruled by the descendants of the "Doomed Ones", an ancient people who existed in the age before the rise of Melniboné. These people activated tremendous forces, rupturing doorways between various realms of time and space, and changing the plant and wildlife into unnatural shapes. They created a great many inventions that ultimately brought about their destruction. The inhabitants of Org are stunted and strangely altered outwardly, mentally they are warped even more than their bodies. Pale Sea:--the sea lying between the Eastern and Western Continents, north of the island of Pan Tang. (Stormbringer)

Pan Tang:--an unholy isle of fully human warrior-wizards that lies in the Pale Sea north of Melniboné. A priest-aristocracy led by Jagreen Lern, the Theocrat of Pan Tang, runs the country from its capital at Hwamgaarl. Their people had little contact with outsiders and their priesthood sought to emulate the magical powers of Melniboné. They claim a kinship with the race of Mer-people. Their army is large and well disciplined, augmented by wizards and hunting tigers. Their fleet is the best in the Young Kingdoms and they raid with little discrimination. Pikarayd:--a nation on the eastern shore of the Southern Continent. There are several trading cities on the coast. (Elric of Melniboné, The Sailor on the Sea of Fate, The Bane of the Black Sword, Stormbringer)

Phum:--also spelled P'hum, it is a country of the unmapped East, laying beyond the Weeping Wastes, the Sighing Desert, even beyond Elwher. It is one of the oldest of the Young Kingdom. The kingdom is famed for its mono-colored warrior-priests. (Elric of Melniboné)

Potain:-- a county, presumably in the southern nation of Argimiliar. (A Woman's Power)

Purple Towns, Island of:--also called the Purple Ports, it is an island trading nation that lay to the east of Melniboné. Its capital is the city of Menii. The isle is considered a seapower, having a fleet of merchant ships. The buildings of the many cities on this isle were built with a type of purple stone. Of all the peoples of the Young Kingdoms, its people were the least unfriendly to the Melnibonéans. (Elric of Melniboné, The Sailor on the Sea of Fate, The Weird of the White Wolf, Stormbringer)

Quarzhasaat:--a lonely city of towers and minarets located on the Eastern Continent in the Sighing Desert. Two millennia prior to Elric's reign, the city, capital of a then great and verdant empire-nation, engaged Melniboné in a great war. The casting of certain incautious spells engulfed the Empire in a tide of sand, out of which only the city of Quarzhasaat survived. At the time of the Saga, the city was ruled by a Council of Seven, at least until Elric ended the war. The "thieves" in the city speak Opish, a secret gutter cant that is actually a language older than Melniboné. (The Fortress of the Pearl)

Ragged Pillars:--a range of low mountains lying several days travel from the city of Quarzhasaat along the "Red Road". (The Fortress of the Pearl)

Ramasaz:--a seaport on Lormyr's western shore. (Elric of Melniboné)

Raschil:--the coastal capital city of the southern nation of Filkhar. (The Fortress of the Pearl, The Weird of the White Wolf)

Red Road:--the highway that stretches from Quarzhasaat to the Rugged Pillars mountain range. The road is paved with red stones and is generally kept clear of sand. (The Fortress of the Pearl)

Rignariom:--an southern Ilmiorian city that lies near the border with Jadmar. It is famed for a religious sect called the Mystikers of Rignariom. (The Bane of the Black Sword, The Soul of an Old Machine)

R'lin K'ren A'a:--means "Where the High Ones Meet." It is the original homeland of the race Melnibonéan. Located on an undeveloped continent that lies to the southwest of Melniboné and west of the Southern Continent and the Boiling Sea. Legend has it that the gods came to earth here to decide the rules of their "Cosmic Struggle". After this, the populace left enmasse and migrated to the Sorcerer's Isle and Melniboné. The lords of Melniboné dispute this. They believe the refugees interbred with humans and vanished. The city now lies in ruin, having been abandoned for some 12,000 years. All that remains on the island is a humanoid race called the Olab. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate, Revenge of the Rose)

Roaring Rocks:--a huge expanse of water in the Far Eastern Sea, where huge volcanic cliffs rose from the sea, and the waters heave, boil and howl with a fierce noise. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate)

Ruined Castle:--lies in a remote province of one of the Southern nations, presumably Pikarayd or Argimiliar. A crashed starship lies buried beneath it. (The Gothic Touch)

Ryfel:--a port city of the nation of Pikarayd. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate)

Salish-Kwoonn:--the realm that the Gypsy Nations exist in. (Revenge of the Rose)

Samarianth:--a mythical "nation" that is said to lie on the barren northern coast of Ilmiora. (Temptations of Iron)

Schlan River:--a foaming river of Lormyr, a tributary of the great Zaphra-Trepak river system. It is not navigable due to the huge waterfalls and rapids. (The Vanishing Tower)

Semeniomous:--a seaport on the Island of Purple Towns. (The Soul of an Old Machine)

Sequa:--a province of Jharkor. Sequaloris is the seat of this province of lush wheat-lands. The first great battle with the forces of Pan Tang was fought here. (Stormbringer)

Sequaloris:--a small, walled city in Jharkor. (Stormbringer)

Serpent's Teeth:--a feared stretch of hazardous water lying close to the coast of Shazaar. The Teeth tower above the sea. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate, Stormbringer)

Shazaar:--also spelled Shazar, it is a coastal nation of lush plains lying on the Western Continent. Shazaar lies to the south of the nation of Jharkor. It is located northeast of the Silent Land, their common border being a swamp called the Marsh of the Mists. The capital city is the port of Aflitain. It fields an excellent cavalry. Shemeel:--a still, leaden lake found in the Grey Lands Of the Unmapped East. (Trembler on the Axis)

Sighing Desert:--a sandy wasteland that lay to the east of Ilmiora, west of the nations of Eshmir and Phum, and north across an unnamed mountain range from the Weeping Wastes. It is an endless wasteland over which constantly hissed a mournful, sighing wind. The desert is barren and bleak, with huge sand dunes and stark, jutting rocks, the remains of eroded mountain ranges. The city of Tanelorn was thought to be found in its western regions. The desert is rumored to have form during the destruction of a warring empire, leaving only the city of Quarzhasaat intact. Sighing Lake:---a body of water that holds the sunken city of Yagala in the realm of Hyboria. (Conan the Barbarian #14, "A Sword Called Stormbringer", and #15, "Green Goddess of Melniboné", by Michael Moorcock, James Cawthorn, and Roy Thomas)

Sighing Sea:--a sea near Melniboné. (The Weird of the White Wolf)

Silent Land:--a land lying south of Shazaar. Its inhabitants were related to the winged people of Myyrrhn. The country's northeastern border is a swamp called the Marshes of the Mists. A tribe called the Kretti dwelt here before migrating to the Sorcerer's Isle. (The Weird of the White Wolf, Elric at the End of Time)

Silver Flower Oasis:--a nomad trading-center that lies deep in the Sighing Desert, 100 miles east of Quarzhasaat, along the Red Road. The oasis encampment is built around the citadel of Kasbeh Moulor Ka Riiz, a shelter for anyone requesting justice. The Silver Flower Oasis is the preeminent meeting place for all the nomad tribes of the desert. It is here that they come to trade, make alliances, and generally converse with each other. Singing Citadel:--a shimmering, multi-colored Chaos citadel, located in the northwestern nation of Jharkor near the town of Thokora. It is the home of Balo, jester to the Lords of Chaos. (The Weird of the White Wolf)

Solaidignia:--a island city that lies a month's ride south of Jharkor. The island is linked to the mainland by a causeway. (The White Child)

Sorcerer's Isle:--a remarkable island lying west of Melniboné in the Dragon Sea. It was inhabited by refugees of R'lin K'ren A'a after that city was abandoned. As the inhabitants were the same root race as those of Melniboné, it is assumed that they were part of the Bright Empire. The island was the residence of Cran Liret, the notable "Thief of Spells". Being rather good at his trade, he became embroiled in a spell-war with several of his rivals. He was dispatched, but not before causing destruction to the greater part of the isle and permeating it all with a great deal of residual magic. It lay all but abandoned for some time, until a tribe from the Silent Lands, called the Kretti, migrated to the island. A shaman of the tribe discovered how to reactivate the magic spells and devices. He and his entire tribe were obliterated in a spell duel with Elric. The only remaining inhabitants were a group of hermit practitioners of the White Arts. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate, Elric at the End of Time, Stormbringer)

Southern Continent:--also called the "Southlands," it is the continent that lies to the Southeast of Melniboné. (Stormbringer)

Stagasaz:--an old town of Lormyr, it lies where the Schlan River joins with the Zaphra-Trepak. (The Vanishing Tower)

Tamaela Dom:--a untamed woodland nation of the Unmapped East. (Trembler on the Axis)

Tanelorn:--"the Eternal". A city of indescribable peace, dedicated to Balance, that lay in the Sighing Desert near Ilmiora. Tanelorn exists in every one of the realms of the Multiverse, and in all of them save one, it has been beautiful. It has a low wall, pastel towers, and curved turrets and domes. The inhabitants of the city have come from all across the Earth and other realms to live together in peace and harmony. Tanelorn has existed since before time and will exist after the end of time. That is why it is known as "Eternal Tanelorn". (Elric of Melniboné, The Vanishing Tower)

Tarkesh:--a nation of the Western Continent, famed for it's whirling dancers and well-built galleys. This peninsular maritime nation lies to the north of Dharijor and northeast of Jharkor. The capital city is the port of Banarva. (The Weird of the White Wolf, The Vanishing Tower, Stormbringer)

Taueloru:--a place were Elric swore an oath of vengeance against Theleb K'aarna. Its location is not stated, and this researcher believes to be an alternate spelling or a typo of the name Tanelorn. It is included here for the sake of completeness. (The Bane of the Black Sword)

Teeth of Shenk:--a range of low hills located between Guyë and Toomoo-Kag-Sanapet-of-the-Invincible-Temple. It is named after a local demon-god. (Revenge of the Rose)

Temoraal:--a cursed island, presumed to be lying in the Eastern Sea. It is inhabited by a race of symbiotic worms. (Trembler on the Axis)

Thokora:--a town in the Jharkorian province of Gharav. (The Weird of the White Wolf)

Tomesk:--a town of the Unmapped East. It lies on the east edge of the Grey Lands. (Trembler on the Axis)

Toomoo-Kag-Sanapet-of-the-Invincible-Temple:--the "Capital of Iniquity and Unguessed at Wealth". The city lies in the Unmapped East, on the caravan route between Anakhazhan and Elwher. It is nothing more than a collection of shacks surrounded by a mud and timber wall. Cornfields surround the city. (Revenge of the Rose)

Toraunz:--a city-state of the western nation of Tarkesh. (Stormbringer)

Trepesaz:--A seaport of the southern nation of Lormyr. (The Vanishing Tower)

Trollan:--a village-sized wheeled city of the Gypsy Nations, it can be found in the realm of Salish Kwoonn. (Revenge of the Rose)

Tumbra:--a city or region, presumably in the land of Phum. (The Bane of the Black Sword)

Ufych-Sormeer:--a nation of the Young Kingdoms, its location is unknown. Four unworldly wizards had a misunderstanding with Elric here. (The Fortress of the Pearl)

Uhaio:--a port city that lies on the tip of the smallest of the Vilmirian peninsulas. (Stormbringer)

Ulshinir:--a harbor-town of a realm known only as "The Land of the Three". It is noted for its steep-roofed houses and narrow spires. The town is protected from the sea by a series of reefs. Beyond it lies the vast bulk of the Heavy Sea. (Revenge of the Rose)

Unmapped East:--the "Eastlands", an area that is seldom traveled to by the men of the West. It lies on the Eastern Continent, beyond the Weeping Wastes and the Sighing Desert. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate, The Vanishing Tower)

Unnamed Mountains:--there is a high range of mountains, whose jagged crags are "lost in the clouds." Never formally named, the range lies between the Sighing Desert and the Weeping Wastes. (Stormbringer)

Utkel:--a port city on the Island of Purple Towns. It boasts the largest harbor of all the towns. (Stormbringer)

Valederia:--the presumed capital of the Valederian Directorates. (Revenge of the Rose)

Valederian Directorates:--lies to the east of Tanelorn, beyond the Sighing Desert (presumably to the northeast of it). It is considered to be a nation of the Unmapped East, and experiences raids by a nomad tribe called the Haghan'iin Host. (Revenge of the Rose)

Valley of Dragons:--a place in the far north where dwells the race called the Eldren and their Dragons. (The Dragon's Heart)

Vanishing Tower:--it is also known as the "Tower of Voilodion Ghagnasdiak". This tower flickers from one realm of existence to another, from one age to another, and exists in a single location for only a few moments at a time. At one time the normal citadel of a lawful knight, the tower was attacked by the forces of Chaos and set adrift in time and space. (The Sailor on the Sea of Fate, The Vanishing Tower)

Varkalk River:--a "ferocious" river that flows past Nadsokor on its way to the sea. (The Vanishing Tower)

Vilmir:--a nation of the Eastern Continent, considered a seapower. It lies to the south of the nations of Ilmiora and Org. It lies across the Straits of Vilmir from the Island of Purple Towns. Vilmir's capital is the port city of Jadmar. It has large cities on flat plains. (The Weird of the White Wolf, The Vanishing Tower, Stormbringer)

Vilmir, Straits of:--the stretch of water lying between southern Vilmir and the Island of Purple Towns. The people of Menii call the fog covering the Straits "ghost sails".(The Bane of the Black Sword, The Soul of an Old Machine)

Vilmirian Sea:--thought to be the area of water lying directly west of Vilmir, between the Pale Sea and the Oldest Ocean. The water is a beautiful shade of blue. (The Fortress of the Pearl)

Vilmiro:--a port city of the nation of Vilmar. (The Vanishing Tower)

Voashoon:--the most powerful clan of southeastern Ilmiora. (The Bane of the Black Sword)

Voilodion Ghagnasdiak, Tower of:--see the entry for Vanishing Tower.

Volofar:--a nation that lies in the realm known only as "The Land of the Three". (Revenge of the Rose)

Waued Nii:--a clan of nomads of the Sighing Desert living near Elwher. They boast to have looted the nation of Phum. (The Fortress of the Pearl)

Weeping Wastes:--a damp scrubland lying east of Ilmiora and Vilmir, south of the Sighing Desert and Eshmir, west of Phum and north of the Eastern Ocean. There is an unnamed mountain range that lies along its northern border. The Weeping Wastes is a place of eternal rainfall; it drizzles constantly. (Elric of Melniboné, Stormbringer)

Western Marches:--an area of the nation of Tarkesh near the Jharkorian border. The area consists of forests and farmlands. (Stormbringer)

World's Edge:--literally the edge of the world. It lies in the southern land of Lormyr, beyond Castle Kaneloon. Past the citadel lay the stuff of unformed Chaos. (The Weird of the White Wolf)

Xanardwys:--a city of the Eastern Continent that presumably lie to the north of the Sighing Desert, and east of the Dakwinsi Steppe. To the west of the city lies a mountain range and to the east lies the city of Elwher. The city exists in several incarnations across the Multiverse, much like Tanelorn. (White Wolf's Song)

Xanyaw, The Vale of:--Lies high in the mountains near Myyrrhn. The valley is pitch-dark and alive with menace. (Stormbringer)

Xerlernes:--a mountain range located in an unnamed realm of air elementals that lies beyond the Valley of Currents. (The Bane of the Black Sword)

Yagala:---a magical city that lay in the midst of the Sighing Lake in the realm of Hyboria. Within the city lies the tomb of Terhali, the Green Empress of Melniboné. (Conan the Barbarian #15, "Green Goddess of Melniboné", by Michael Moorcock, James Cawthorn, and Roy Thomas)

Yeshpotoom-Kahlai:--the "Unholy Fortress", an evil sorceress' citadel, presumably in the land of Phum. (The Bane of the Black Sword)

Young Kingdoms:--in its most basic sense, every nation on the Earth that isn't Melniboné. The Young Kingdoms were born of the remnants of the Bright Empire, after Melniboné lost interest in ruling them. Most of the Young Kingdoms referred to in the Saga lie on the great landmasses of the Northern and Western hemispheres. (Elric of Melniboné, Revenge of the Rose)

Yu:--a poor barbarian nation lying several months travel south from Melniboné on the Southern Continent. Yu lies south of the River Ar and the nation of Oin and Lormyr. Its capital city is the port of Dhoz-Kam, which it shares with the nation of Oin. (Elric of Melniboné)

Zalonikad:--a land of the Unmapped East lying to the west of the Grey Lands. (Trembler on the Axis)

Zaphra-Trepak River:--the main river system of Lormyr. It is navigable from the coast to at least as far south as Iosaz. (The Vanishing Tower)
